Debate & Speech for Elementary Students

Famously, Americans' number one fear is public speaking while death only ranks number two. If that's so, this profound fear probably starts at an early age.

In our Debate & Speech class, we take the fear out of speaking before an audience by getting kids talking in front of a supportive group. They learn skills like standing up tall, using a loud voice and making eye contact.

Students are given a point of view to defend on questions such as “Should teachers give homework” and “Are All-Boys or All-Girls schools a good idea?”. Students make arguments and rebut the presentations of their opponents. A panel of students vote on which team made the best case.

We also critique the speaking style of historic presidential candidates and TED talk presenters and play public speaking games to help perfect our own styles.

If the class is successful, our students won't list public speaking as their #1 fear when they grow up!

Boys and girls, grades 2-5. This class will compliment Your Voice: Public Speaking for Kids but previous public speaking class work is NOT a requirement.
