Unified Tennis
Inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. This new program is designed to join student-athletes with and without intellectual and/or physical disabilities through the sport of tennis. This program is designed to provide a supportive and inclusive environment where children can learn, grow, develop new friendships and have fun on the tennis court. Through tennis, we aim to enhance motor skills, social skills, and the overall well-being of all student athletes.

The Unified Tennis program is open to student-athletes with intellectual disabilities in grades 2-5 and student-athletes without disabilities in grades 6-12 who want to be a tennis partner.

A Unified Athlete is a student-athlete with intellectual and/or physical disabilities who typically receives Special Education services. Whether your child is a beginner or has prior tennis experience, our goal is to accommodate your child’s abilities and needs, promote skill development, and foster a sense of accomplishment and community.

A Unified Partner is a student-athlete without intellectual disabilities who wants to support the athletes learning the sport. Partners are required to have basic tennis skills and experience, and the willingness to foster team play, fun, and friendship.
Unified athletes and partners are considered teammates. They will practice and compete together consistently throughout the 4 week program. They will be instructed by coaches and community volunteers.

Meet the Coaches!
Our program is led by volunteer tennis coaches, Ali Balster and Mary Krattenmaker.

Mary is passionate about sharing her love for tennis and staying active, especially within the community. As a volunteer tennis coach, she is committed to helping players of all skill levels improve their game while fostering a positive, supportive environment. Mary believes in the power of sports to build confidence, teamwork, and lasting friendships. Outside of coaching, she enjoys exploring new ways to engage with her community.

A life long tennis player, Ali is excited to share her love of the sport in this program. Ali started playing at a young age and played competitively in high school and again briefly as an adult. As a spectator at many of the unified athletic events at Hopkinton High School, Ali was in awe of the joy, passion, and camaraderie displayed by athletes and partners alike. She is excited to bring a similar experience to the children in this program.
