babysitting class
The American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training with Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course prepares youth ages 11–16 with the knowledge and skills needed to safely and confidently care for children and infants. This course incorporates the latest science and teaches participants how to recognize and respond to a variety of first aid emergencies including burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, and back injuries, as well as heat and cold emergencies. Participants will also learn how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies involving pediatric victims (infants and children up to 12 years of age).

Through hands-on activities, videos, and group discussions, students will build practical babysitting skills such as feeding, diapering, picking up and holding children, supervising play safely, and responding to emergencies. The course also helps participants develop leadership skills, learn how to start and manage a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe, and guide children’s behavior in a positive way.

Because CPR skills are part of this training and can be physically demanding, participants should ideally weigh at least 85–90 pounds to successfully complete the CPR portion of the course.

Students who successfully complete the course will receive a 10-year American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training certificate and a Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certificate valid for two years.

Please bring a lunch as well as a light, snack. All items should be peanut free. Class ends promptly at the designated time. Please arrive promptly to retrieve your student from the classroom.

This program was developed by Holly Burns and Cate Barry for their Girl Scout Silver Award. The idea for this class was motivated by the girls desire to increase responsiveness to medical emergencies. The girls would like to thank the KeepSmilin4Abbie Foundation and trainer Michelle Levenson for providing assistance and support towards the success of this program.
